Chapter 13

The Fight

As Raphael stepped into the gym, the crowd instinctively parted, creating a clear path toward the center of the room. All eyes were on him. The air was thick with anticipation, and energy pulsed like a living thing through the tense silence.

Ethan was already there, shirtless, his toned muscles flexing with a calculated menace. He stood in the spotlight of admiration, surrounded by his friends, their cheers bolstering his confidence. Melody lingered to the side, her gaze fixed intently on the unfolding moment, eyes shimmering with barely concealed excitement. Liam and Kael stood on either side of Raphael, their presence steady and grounding.

– Hi. I see you’re quite… prepared – Raphael said, voice calm but laced with subtle provocation.

Ethan chuckled, a dark, arrogant sound as he cracked his knuckles. He began circling Raphael like a predator playing with its prey.

– I always come prepared when there’s a challenge – he sneered. – Especially for a mystery supernatural like you. What exactly are you planning to do, outmatch me with charm alone?

– Is it working? – Raphael countered smoothly.

Laughter rippled through the crowd, but Melody bit her lip, clearly caught off guard by his confidence. Ethan stopped abruptly, standing just inches from Raphael, eyes narrowed.

– Not even close – he growled, though something in his expression flickered—uncertainty, just for a moment. – This isn’t a beauty contest, Raphael.

– If you say so…

The air inside the gym grew heavier, vibrating with tension as Ethan stepped forward. Without warning, he lunged.

Raphael barely managed to react, throwing up his arms just in time to block the incoming punch. The impact sent a sharp jolt through his forearms, but he stood his ground.

Ethan’s fist came again—faster, harder—and this time it landed. A sharp jab to the side sent Raphael stumbling back a few steps. He gasped, pain blooming beneath his ribs.

He’s strong. Stronger than I thought.

Ethan didn’t let up. He moved like a trained predator, muscles coiled and fluid. Another blow came—Raphael ducked, spinning sideways, avoiding the worst of it, then twisted around to land a punch of his own.

It hit. A clean shot to Ethan’s jaw.

The werewolf blinked, surprised for a split second—then grinned.

– Not bad. But you’ll have to do better than that.

He kicked.

Raphael felt the strike slam into his stomach, and the world tilted for a moment. He hit the floor hard, air whooshing from his lungs. But he gritted his teeth, forcing himself back up, fists clenched.

Blood tasted like iron in his mouth.

He waited, breathing hard. Ethan charged again.

This time, Raphael was ready. He deflected the first punch, blocked the next. They exchanged blows—Ethan’s fists heavy and brutal, Raphael’s moves fast and desperate. A hit to the shoulder made Raphael flinch, but he spun on instinct and landed a sharp elbow to Ethan’s side.

The crowd roared.

I won’t go down. Not without showing him who I am.

Ethan growled, losing patience. He caught Raphael’s arm mid-swing and pulled, slamming him against the mat. Pain flared through his back, but Raphael refused to scream.

Instead, he pushed back with both legs and rolled them over, breaking the hold.

They broke apart, breathing heavily. Sweat dripped down their skin. Raphael wiped blood from his lip, eyes burning with focus. Ethan looked at him, chest heaving, amused and annoyed.

– You’re stubborn. I’ll give you that.

– You haven’t seen anything yet – Raphael hissed, launching forward again.

They collided.

Flesh hit flesh. Grit met force. Every moment was a blur of instinct—blocks, dodges, counterstrikes. Raphael’s body screamed with exhaustion, but he held his ground. He fought like someone with something to prove. Because he did.

Because he had to.

The next snarl came without warning. Ethan lunged, grabbing Raphael with brute strength and hurling him across the room. The impact echoed as Raphael hit the wall hard, drawing a gasp from the onlookers. The crowd was stunned. Melody covered her mouth in shock, her eyes wide. Liam and Kael rushed toward him, but Raphael raised a hand, already pushing himself up.

His skin had begun to shimmer—faint at first, then glowing steadily with a gentle blue light. An unfamiliar energy surged within him, awakening something he hadn’t known was there. He stood tall, head high, a quiet fire behind his eyes.

– Nice warm-up.

Ethan froze mid-step, eyes widening at the surreal glow now radiating from Raphael’s body. The room fell silent. Whispered murmurs stirred through the crowd like leaves in the wind. Melody’s gaze glowed with a mix of curiosity and awe. Liam and Kael stepped back, sensing the change and giving him space.

Then, Raphael rose—his feet lifting slowly off the ground as if gravity had simply decided to let him go. He levitated toward Ethan, his eyes locked onto the werewolf’s with an intensity that sent a chill through the air.

Ethan swallowed hard. His confidence cracked, then crumbled. The blue light cast an ethereal glow across Raphael’s face, a vision of something ancient, untamed, and overwhelming. The crowd dared not move. Melody held her breath. Ethan’s instincts screamed danger.

And then it happened—Raphael felt it inside him. A strange sensation rippled through his body. His fangs lengthened, sharper than ever. His nails extended into claw-like tips, deadly and precise.

Ethan took a step back, his eyes wide in disbelief. His wolf senses knew. This wasn’t an ordinary supernatural. This was something else.

Something more.

Then Raphael spoke—and his voice had changed. It rang out, deep and commanding, a force that reverberated through every wall and every soul in the room.

– STOP.

Ethan froze. Not of his own will, but as if invisible chains wrapped around his limbs and locked him in place. His eyes darted with panic, but his body refused to move. The crowd stared, mouths open in silent astonishment. Melody’s cheeks flushed as if she were watching a vision she couldn’t quite believe. Liam and Kael shared a look that said everything: what the fuck?

– Do you want to fight still? – Raphael asked, his tone razor-sharp and eerily calm.

Ethan strained against the force holding him captive. His muscles tensed, his breath shallow, but no movement came. His lips parted with effort, but only a gasp escaped.

– YOU CAN MOVE.

The moment Raphael’s words left his mouth, Ethan stumbled forward, freed. He took a deep, shaky breath and steadied himself. Then, with a defiant growl, he launched at Raphael again—this time mid-air, his body shifting into his wolf form in a flash of fur and power. The crowd roared.

But Raphael didn’t flinch.

– I’ll ask you again. Do you want to fight, or we can call it a tie?

The massive wolf landed heavily in front of him, claws digging into the floor, breath ragged. It growled, teeth bared—ready to strike. But it hesitated. Somewhere behind the rage, Ethan’s mind processed the truth. He could keep going, risking humiliation and injury. Or he could end it here.

Raphael tilted his head slightly.

– Ok. Your choice.

The wolf snarled… then paused. And slowly, the transformation reversed. Fur receded. Bones shifted. In moments, Ethan stood before him once more in human form, panting, chest rising and falling rapidly.

The crowd fell completely silent.

Ethan’s eyes locked onto Raphael’s.

– Tie – he said, voice low but steady.

– Good for me. I don’t mean any harm – Raphael replied gently.

There was a pause. Then, a nod. A subtle gesture of understanding. Ethan realized it wasn’t about humiliation or dominance. It was about control. Power with purpose. A lesson taught, not forced.

The crowd erupted in applause. Melody beamed with delight. Liam and Kael exchanged glances, both proud and amused. Ethan ran a hand through his tousled hair, exhaling slowly.

Raphael stepped forward and reached out a hand to him.

Ethan looked at Raphael’s outstretched hand, clearly caught off guard. No one had ever offered him a handshake after a fight—especially not someone who had just radiated such raw, otherworldly power. The tension between them still hung heavy in the air, like electricity that refused to dissipate.

For a heartbeat, he didn’t move.

His blue eyes flicked from Raphael’s hand to his face, searching for a trace of mockery or hidden threat. But there was none. Only calm. And something else—something quietly sincere.

Slowly, almost reluctantly, Ethan reached out and clasped Raphael’s hand.

Firmly. Solidly.

The crowd fell into reverent silence, watching as two of the most powerful supernatural beings at the academy sealed their clash not with a final blow, but with a gesture of mutual respect. Every onlooker felt the shift—like something greater than rivalry had just taken root.

– I don’t want to be your enemy. Quite the opposite – Raphael said, his voice low but unwavering.

Ethan’s grip tightened just slightly, and for a moment, time seemed to slow. A flicker of something passed between them. Recognition. Respect. Maybe even understanding. He nodded once and released Raphael’s hand.

– I don’t want an enemy like you – he replied, and the corner of his mouth curved upward into a rare, honest smile.

The silence shattered into a wave of cheering and applause. The crowd erupted, voices rising in excitement and admiration for the unexpected moment of camaraderie. It wasn’t just a handshake. It was a shift in the balance of the school’s social dynamic—an alliance where there had been only friction.

– I hope we could meet again, but not for a fight this time – Raphael added with a faint smile, his body still glowing softly.

Ethan laughed, the sound surprisingly light after the weight of battle. The tension that had hung between them like a blade dissolved into something more human. More real.

– I hope so too – he said, his eyes sparkling with newfound respect.

On the sidelines, Melody’s cheeks turned a soft pink. She leaned in toward her friends, whispering with barely contained excitement that she had never seen Ethan like this before. Her voice trembled slightly, like she herself didn’t fully understand the thrill running through her.

As the crowd began to disperse, the tension giving way to celebration and whispered retellings, Liam and Kael approached, weaving through the thinning circle of onlookers.

– What’s up, guys? – Raphael asked, wiping the last trace of blood from the corner of his mouth, his expression relaxed now, despite the bruises beginning to form on his ribs.

Liam grinned and clapped him hard on the back, his green eyes practically glowing with excitement.

– That was insane! You totally owned Ethan.

– Totally – Kael echoed, nodding. His black hair clung to his damp forehead, but his eyes shone with admiration. – You handled that perfectly. Ethan needed to be put in his place.

Kael’s smile faded the moment the others turned away. His hand closed gently around Raphael’s arm.

– Come with me. Just a second – he murmured, voice low and serious.

He led Raphael a few steps aside, away from the lingering crowd, out of earshot. The buzz of voices blurred into the background, but Kael’s black eyes were sharp—focused entirely on him.

– Where did you learn that? – he asked. – The thing with your voice. Compelling Voice.

Raphael blinked.

– What?

– Don’t play dumb. You used it. When you said “stop,” Ethan couldn’t move. That wasn’t just some dramatic yell—that was real. That was a command laced with power. And then you released him the same way.

Raphael stared, trying to match Kael’s intensity but failing to understand the reason behind it.

– I didn’t know that was… anything. A power. A name.

Kael’s expression hardened.

– That’s not just “anything.” It’s a rare ability. Very rare. Vampires are born with it sometimes, but even then, they need years to control it. For someone who’s not a vampire… it’s almost unheard of.

Raphael’s eyes dropped slightly. His fingers curled by his side.

He could still feel the echo of that moment—the force in his voice, the stillness that followed, the silence that spread like glass cracking across the gym floor. It hadn’t felt like casting a spell. It hadn’t even felt like power. It had just been… urgent. As if the words needed to happen. As if anything else would’ve been too late.

– I didn’t even think – he said softly. – I just really wanted him to stop. I needed him to. Everything was spinning out of control, and I had to end it before someone got hurt.

He glanced back at Kael, eyes searching.

– And when I saw he couldn’t move, I kind of figured something weird was going on. So I tried again. I told him he could move. And he did.

Kael was silent. No flicker of sarcasm, no trace of the usual calm confidence he carried so easily. His gaze lingered on Raphael’s face as if trying to read beyond it, to pull meaning from something he didn’t yet understand.

– You’re telling me… you used Compelling Voice instinctively, without training, without knowing what it even was?

– I guess so.

Kael drew in a breath through his nose, slow and controlled. His eyes stayed locked on Raphael’s.

There was no fear in them. Not of Raphael. But something deeper stirred in their depths—conflict. Discomfort. Not with what had happened, but with what it might mean. A question he couldn’t yet form.

Behind his silence lingered the voice of someone else—Elara’s warnings, the quiet doubts of the Council, whispers about Raphael’s unknown origin. And now this.

Kael didn’t move. He just watched.

And for the first time since Raphael arrived at Amaltea, Kael didn’t look like someone sure of what to do next.

Soon Melody joined them, her presence gentle and warm despite the residual energy still lingering in the air. Her cheeks were flushed, but it was no longer from tension—now it was awe, curiosity, something deeper.

Raphael turned to her.

– Hi Melody. You know I’m new here, but you should know that I’m new in this world as well. So don’t be surprised by my strange questions sometimes.

His voice carried no shame—only honesty. Vulnerability, even.

Melody smiled brightly, her eyes softening. She reached up to tuck a loose curl behind her ear, a shimmer of excitement still dancing in her gaze.

– Of course! I’m here to help anytime.

– Yeah, we all are – Liam added, bouncing slightly on his heels. – You’re part of our crew now.

Kael nodded in agreement, his voice quieter but just as firm.

– Just let us know if you need anything.

Raphael hesitated for a second, then looked at Melody again, tilting his head slightly.

– I have a silly question. I always thought that sirens are living only in the water.

Melody laughed softly, the sound melodic and soothing. It slipped into the air like a soft current, drawing Raphael in.

– Well, that’s true for some sirens, but not all of us. I’m a land siren – she explained with a proud little grin. – We can live on land just fine, though we do need to be near water occasionally to recharge our powers.

Raphael studied her, intrigued.

– What else can you do? What are your special powers or abilities?

Melody’s smile turned teasing.

– Besides singing enchantments? – she said, lifting a brow. – I can control bodies of water—make them rise or calm them. And I have enhanced speed and agility.

– Her Singing Voice can make anyone fall in love with her, too – Liam chimed in with a wink, nudging Raphael’s side.

– Wow – Raphael whispered, the reaction sincere.

Melody giggled at his tone, clearly pleased.

– What about you? – she asked, taking a small step closer. – You’re clearly strong and fast, but what else can you do?

The air shifted subtly. Both Kael and Liam leaned in, their attention sharpening. They were waiting—expecting. Wanting to understand who, or what, Raphael really was.

But before he could answer, a sharp noise cracked across the gym.

A loud thud. Shouts. Something falling.

A commotion had erupted near the entrance. Heads turned. Voices raised.

A chill ran down Raphael’s spine.

– Now what? – he muttered, his eyes narrowing as his body instinctively turned toward the source of the disturbance.

His pulse quickened again—not with fear, but readiness.
