Kaito & Lila
As the evening approached, Elara led Raphael to the cozy common room. The soft glow of enchanted lights cast a warm ambiance over the space, their golden shimmer floating gently in the air like fireflies trapped in slow motion. The room, nestled in one of the older wings of Amaltea Academy, exuded a sense of timeless comfort — worn but polished armchairs in deep burgundy stood in lazy groups, a thick carpet muffled footsteps, and the scent of old wood and magical herbs lingered in the air.
Kaito and Lila were already there, engaged in a friendly conversation by the fireplace, where crimson and violet flames danced hypnotically in the hearth. They turned as Raphael entered, their eyes immediately drawn to him — not just out of politeness, but with genuine curiosity. He felt the familiar stir of self-consciousness tighten his chest, the awareness that he was still new to this world, still being observed and measured.
– Hello! I’m Raphael – he said, his voice steady despite the flutter in his chest.
Kaito, the Fire Elemental, flashed a charming smile and extended his hand. He was striking — with tousled red hair that caught the firelight like copper wire and eyes that gleamed with mischief and warmth.
– Nice to meet you, Raphael. I’m Kaito.
His handshake was firm and warm, almost as if he was sharing a bit of his elemental power with him. The heat seeped into Raphael’s palm and spread subtly up his arm, not uncomfortably, but in a way that made him acutely aware of the boy’s power.
– Wow! That’s a really warm welcome – Raphael said, surprised.
Kaito chuckled, his eyes flickering with amusement.
– Just a little taste of what I can do.
Next to him, Lila stepped forward. Her presence had a softness to it, as though she belonged to the air itself — she moved as if borne by an unseen breeze. Pale blue eyes sparkled beneath a fringe of silver-blonde hair, and her posture was effortless, elegant.
– I’m Lila – she said softly, her voice like a gentle breeze. She extended her hand as well.
– Nice to meet you, Lila – Raphael replied with a smile.
Her touch was delicate, cool and light — it felt like the sensation of wind brushing skin just before a storm. She pulled him into a brief hug instead, and he inhaled the faint, clean scent of something floral and high-altitude. She leaned in close enough that he felt the whisper of her breath against his ear.
– Elara talks a lot about you.
The hug was over too quickly, and Lila stepped back, her expression inquisitive but kind.
– So, Raphael, what’s your element?
– I’m not an Elemental like you three – he said with a gentle smile, watching their reactions closely.
Both Elementals exchanged glances, a silent flicker of surprise and interest passing between them like static. Kaito raised an eyebrow, leaning in slightly with a spark of playful challenge in his eyes.
– Not an Elemental? Then what sort of supernatural ability do you possess?
His tone wasn’t mocking — there was genuine curiosity in it, the kind that Raphael had grown to appreciate in this place. Lila tilted her head slightly, watching him with an almost feline attentiveness.
– That’s a really good question – Raphael admitted. – I’m learning it, uncovering new surprises every day.
It still felt strange to say it aloud, even now — as if admitting it might break the fragile thread of progress he was clinging to.
– Learning? – Kaito asked, leaning forward with interest. Elara exchanged knowing glances with Lila, and Raphael noticed the flicker of protective pride in her eyes.
– That’s… unusual – she said thoughtfully.
– Most supernatural beings are born with their abilities. Are you saying yours developed later in life? – Lila asked, her voice low, as if trying not to disrupt something sacred.
– Yes. Elara already knows my story. My abilities woke up after I turned twenty-one. I don’t know my parents or my history.
He didn’t mean to let that final sentence carry so much weight, but it hung in the air regardless — heavy and unresolved. A part of him still hated admitting it, not because it embarrassed him, but because it felt so empty. So unfinished.
The Elementals listened intently, fascination etched on their faces. Kaito leaned back, stroking his chin thoughtfully.
– Twenty-one? That’s remarkably late for supernatural abilities to manifest.
Lila’s eyes widened with realization.
– Wait, so you weren’t raised knowing you had powers?
– Exactly – Raphael said simply, and the silence that followed was unexpectedly soft, like a shared understanding.
– That must have been… overwhelming – Lila said softly, her voice filled with empathy.
Kaito nodded.
– And dangerous. Not knowing how to control your powers could have put you in serious trouble.
Elara chimed in:
– But Raphael handled it brilliantly.
– Yeaaa… almost – he said with a crooked grin. – I had a few… accidents during uncovering my abilities.
The word accidents barely left his lips before the group started chuckling, and Raphael could feel the tension dissolving around him.
– Accidents? – Kaito asked, his eyes crinkling with laughter. – Like what? Did you set anything on fire by accident?
– Not yet – Raphael replied with a laugh.
Everyone laughed.
– Well, that’s a relief at least – Elara said, smirking playfully.
– So what kind of ‘accidents’ did you have? – Kaito asked mischievously, leaning forward with genuine interest. – And don’t leave anything out… especially if it involves explosions.
– No. It was more embarrassing – Raphael muttered, blushing.
The trio leaned in closer, their eyes sparkling with anticipation. Raphael’s stomach fluttered nervously — part of him didn’t want to share this, but another part loved how freely they were listening.
– Embarrassing? – Lila asked, trying to suppress her laughter. – Now we definitely have to hear this.
Elara nodded eagerly, surprised she hadn’t heard about that.
– Tell us, tell us! What’s the most embarrassing thing that happened?
– I accidentally teleported from my room to Whispering Woods… totally naked – Raphael confessed, keeping to himself that there were three of them.
The three of them burst out laughing simultaneously, nearly choking on their surprise. The sound filled the room with such pure, uncontrolled mirth that Raphael couldn’t help but join them, even as his cheeks burned.
– No way! – Kaito managed between laughs, wiping tears from his eyes. – You… teleported… naked… to the forest?
Lila was doubled over laughing.
– Oh my god, did anyone see you?
– I hope not – Raphael said, turning red.
The Elementals continued to chuckle, thoroughly amused by his embarrassing ordeal. Elara leaned closer, her eyes twinkling mischievously.
– Well, at least the forest creatures weren’t shocked by the sudden appearance of a naked guy.
Another round of laughter erupted.
– Very funny. Fortunately I already knew how to teleport back – he said, though the memory still made the back of his neck prickle.
– Fortunately? Or unfortunately? – Kaito joked through his laughter. – I mean, can you imagine finding a naked guy suddenly popping out of nowhere in the middle of the forest and wandering to find his way back? Must have been quite the surprise for the wildlife.
Lila snorted with amusement.
– Yeahhh… Aren’t you a little too imaginative, Kaito? – Raphael asked, chuckling.
Kaito grinned unapologetically, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
– Maybe a little. But come on, it’s not every day you get to hear about someone teleporting naked into the forest!
Elara chuckled and nudged him playfully.
– Very funny. Very funny… How about you? You knew your powers since childhood? – Raphael asked, directing the attention away from himself.
– Oh, we definitely knew – Lila answered immediately, her laughter subsiding into a warm smile. – My parents are both powerful air elementals, so I started showing signs of my abilities around age five.
Elara nodded in agreement.
– My family is full of earth elementals.
– And how about you, Kaito? – Raphael asked.
– I’m a fire elemental, and my family has a long history of powerful pyromancers – he said proudly. – I started showing signs of my abilities when I was around six or seven.
He flexed his fingers dramatically, as if summoning flames.
– It was pretty awesome.
– So… no accidentally burning your clothes and staying naked? – Raphael asked with a malicious smile.
The trio burst out laughing again, this time with Kaito reddening slightly.
– Okay, okay, maybe there was one incident or two – he admitted, trying to play it cool. – But I was a kid! Every fire elemental goes through a phase where they can’t control their powers perfectly.
– Got you! – Raphael said with satisfaction.
Kaito threw his hands up in surrender, laughing.
– You’re the worst!
He mockingly glared at him before continuing.
– Fine, fine. There was this one time when I was eight, and I accidentally set my bedsheet on fire.
Elara giggled.
– Wow! I hope you were ok and nobody was hurt – Raphael said in a more serious tone.
Kaito’s expression softened at the concern.
– Yeah, I was fine. My parents were there to put out the fire quickly, and no one got hurt.
He smiled warmly at Raphael.
– It was just a little scare. But it taught me to be more careful with my powers.
Elara nodded encouragingly, her eyes filled with understanding. A calm warmth radiated from her — the kind that made people feel seen, not judged.
– That’s why we’re all here, right? To learn control and how to use our powers properly without accidentally stripping or burning anything down! – she joked lightly, a playful lilt in her voice.
Her words hung in the air like a gentle breeze cutting through lingering tension. Raphael couldn’t help but smirk. He appreciated how easily Elara could lighten a moment without taking away its meaning.
The fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting flickering shadows across the common room walls. The warmth of the flames and the quiet comfort of company made it easy for Raphael to let his guard down. He leaned back slightly, glancing between Kaito and Lila, then finally gave voice to the question that had been swirling in his mind for a while.
– Can I ask you something a bit more… magical? – he said, eyes shifting toward the firelight.
Lila perked up.
– Of course.
– I’m still figuring myself out, but… I’d love to hear more about your powers. What you can actually do — beyond the elements themselves. I mean… wind and fire sound powerful, but how do they really work for you?
Lila smiled, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
– Well… since I’m an Air Elemental, a lot of what I can do is about movement, perception, and presence. I can create wind currents strong enough to lift someone off the ground, glide short distances, muffle sound, or even sharpen my hearing by tuning into the air vibrations.
She paused, her eyes growing distant with a fond memory.
– One time, during a field trip to the Crystal Peaks, our group got caught in a sudden fog bank. We couldn’t see a thing — and the teacher had lost track of a few students. I used a focused air pulse, like a gentle pressure wave, to find them. I could tell where the wind bounced differently… and that’s how I led them back. It was the first time I felt truly useful.
Raphael looked at her, surprised.
– That’s amazing. You make it sound almost… delicate.
Lila chuckled.
– It can be. Air is subtle — until it’s not. In a duel, I can create slicing currents or knock someone off their feet with a gust. But I prefer finesse over force. I guess that’s just my nature.
She turned to Kaito with a teasing smirk.
– Unlike some people who specialize in blowing things up.
Kaito laughed and threw up his hands.
– Guilty.
He sat up straighter, clearly enjoying the opportunity to talk about his powers.
– Fire is wild. Passionate. It responds to emotion — which means you have to learn control fast, or you’ll set half the school on fire by accident. I can ignite flames in my hands, launch bursts, shape fire into simple forms, and even raise the temperature in a room just by focusing. Heat and combustion are part of it, but I also work with internal energy — like charging a strike with thermal force.
Raphael raised an eyebrow.
– That sounds… intense.
– It is. And it can be exhausting too. But fire’s not just about destruction — it’s also protection, warmth, transformation.
He paused, his voice softening as he recalled something.
– Once, in my first year, I got caught out in a freezing storm. I was alone, no coat, totally lost. My magic was still unstable back then, but instinct kicked in. I curled up under a tree and lit a flame around me — not a burning one, just a slow, low pulse. It kept me alive until someone found me the next morning. That night changed how I saw fire. It wasn’t something I had to fear anymore. It became… mine.
There was a pause. Not heavy — just full. Raphael felt the silence settle gently between them like another layer of warmth.
He smiled.
– You both make it sound like your elements are… part of who you are. Not just tools.
Kaito nodded.
– Exactly.
Lila gave a small, thoughtful nod.
– And maybe that’s what you’re still discovering — what’s already part of you, just waiting to be claimed.
The group settled into a comfortable silence for a moment, exchanging grins that said more than words ever could — the kind of silent connection that only formed when people felt safe with each other, even in their awkwardness.
Then Lila spoke up, her voice light but sincere.
– You know, it’s kinda nice having someone who’s not an expert at handling their powers around here.
She giggled, nudging him playfully. There was no mockery in her gesture — just friendly honesty, and maybe even a bit of admiration for the courage it took to be that open.
– Maybe. But it can be very tiring sometimes – Raphael admitted, his tone quieter, more honest than he intended.
The weight of it pulsed under his skin — the exhaustion, the constant effort to catch up, to stay afloat in a place where everyone else seemed born to swim. Sometimes, he envied their ease. Their certainty.
Kaito nodded sympathetically, his expression softening with understanding.
– I get it – he said gently. – It can be exhausting trying to keep up with everyone else who seems to have their powers under control.
There was no pity in his voice — just a shared weariness, the kind that comes from living through your own fire. He paused, as if choosing his next words with care.
– But hey, we’re all here for each other.
Those words struck Raphael harder than he expected. He hadn’t realized how much he needed to hear them until now.
– Thanks – he murmured, not quite able to meet Kaito’s eyes, but grateful nonetheless.
Elara smiled warmly at him, the corners of her lips curving with quiet reassurance. She reached out to pat his shoulder, her touch firm but gentle — grounding.
– You’ll get the hang of it – she encouraged. – It takes time and practice. And maybe a little less teleporting around without clothes.
She laughed softly, and the sound pulled a reluctant smile from his lips. It was impossible to stay tense when she looked at him like that — as if she believed in him more than he believed in himself.
– Ok. I think I’ll go to my room. Traditionally… – Raphael said, then glanced at Kaito, still riding the edge of humor. – Kaito, do you live in a boys’ wing as well?
Kaito nodded, his grin returning like a flicker of flame.
– Yep, I’m in the boys’ wing, third floor – he replied casually. – It’s pretty chill — mostly guys hanging out, playing games, or practicing our powers.
He shrugged nonchalantly, as if brushing off the wild potential such a place held.
– Nothing too exciting.
– I know. So if you’re heading to your room, we could go together. Let’s leave girls with their talks – Raphael suggested, his voice laced with a playful edge.
Kaito chuckled, pushing himself off the wall he had been leaning against with fluid ease.
– Sounds like a plan – he agreed, falling into step beside Raphael as they both headed toward the staircase leading to the boys’ wing.
Each footstep echoed softly in the corridor, muted by the evening calm. The castle-like atmosphere of the academy enveloped them — dim lights, polished stone, whispers of magic humming in the air.
– So, you’re just gonna teleport into your room, huh? – Kaito asked, raising an eyebrow with a crooked smile.
– Why? Would you like to see that? – Raphael teased, meeting his gaze with equal mischief.
Kaito grinned mischievously, shrugging his shoulders in exaggerated innocence.
– Maybe. It’d be quicker than walking, right? Plus, I’ve heard some crazy stories about new students miscalculating and ending up in random places.
He chuckled, wagging his eyebrows playfully. Raphael could feel the heat rise faintly in his own chest — not from embarrassment, but from the electric tension of being seen, challenged, and accepted all at once.
– Ok. Hold my hands – Raphael said.
Kaito eagerly reached out and took his hands in his, his fingers intertwining with Raphael’s as he grinned excitedly. The contact sent a quiet thrill through Raphael — warm, grounding, and undeniably real.
– Ready when you are – Kaito said, his eyes sparkling with anticipation. He squeezed Raphael’s hands gently, and Raphael could feel the slight tremble in his grip, the unspoken rush beneath the calm.
His heart raced.
– Let’s do this!
They teleported together to Raphael’s room.
